🚧 Urgent Notice: West Street Slope Failure 🚧

May 18, 2025

Bristol Residents,

I am writing to inform you of a slope failure (landslide) that has occurred on West Street, directly across from Martin’s Hardware. This situation requires your immediate attention, especially if you regularly travel this route.

Assessment and Plan
Earlier today, Selectboard Chair Peeker Heffernan and Public Works Foreman Eric Cota conducted an on-site assessment of the slope failure. Due to the severity of the landslide and its close proximity to the road, they have determined that immediate action is necessary to ensure public safety and maintain access to our pedestrian-friendly village center.

Repair Timeline
Repair efforts will begin immediately on Monday morning, led by Peeker Heffernan working alongside our Public Works Department.

What This Means For You
– Traffic Impact: Please expect delays and possible detours on West Street beginning Monday
– Access to Businesses: Martin’s Hardware and other nearby businesses will remain open, though access may be temporarily adjusted
– Safety Concerns: Please avoid the area directly across from Martin’s Hardware and observe all posted safety barriers

This slope failure comes after our recent spring weather patterns and is being addressed swiftly to minimize disruption to our community’s daily activities and to ensure continued safe access to our downtown area for residents and visitors alike.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to resolve this issue promptly.

For any urgent questions or concerns, please contact the Town Office at (802) 453-2410.

RFP West Street Sidewalk Improvement Scoping Study

May 12, 2025

The Town of Bristol seeks qualified professionals to provide planning and design services for sidewalk improvements along the corridor between Holley Hall and 49 West Street. The existing sidewalk in this area is inconsistent, with some portions containing established pedestrian infrastructure while other sections lack any sidewalk installation. This discontinuity presents safety concerns and limits accessibility for pedestrians.

As shown in the attached site photographs, the current conditions vary significantly throughout
the segments. The goal of this project is to study the feasibility of a continuous, ADA-compliant
sidewalk that enhances pedestrian safety, accessibility, and connectivity within the downtown
area.

The selected firm will collaborate with the Town Administrator, Planning and Zoning
Administrator, and Public Works Foreman throughout the study. The scoping process should
consider all potential risks and solutions.

RFP Mountain Street Stormwater Improvement Scoping Study

April 16, 2025

The Town of Bristol seeks proposals from qualified engineering firms to conduct a scoping study for the Mountain Street drainage system. The objective is to evaluate engineering, environmental, feasibility, and/or benefit-cost analyses to identify and assess solutions that will prevent future flooding, disruptions, and property damage in the project area.

This section of Mountain Street, located near the elementary school and Spring Street, has experienced increased stormwater runoff due to more frequent and intense weather events. The existing 2-foot inlet has been consistently overwhelmed, causing water to flow down Mountain and Spring Streets, resulting in property damage and infrastructure impacts.

The selected firm will collaborate with the Town Administrator and Public Works Foreman throughout the study. The scoping process should consider all potential risks and solutions.
