Water
The source of your drinking water is a “spring” (Vermont Source Type) called the New Haven Spring. The spring is classified by the EPA as a “non-purchased groundwater” source.
Bristol has a Source Protection Plan available from our office that provides more information such as the recharge area for the spring, potential sources of contamination, and procedures for monitoring its’ integrity. The Water Supply Division approved the first Source Protection Plan on 9/24/96. The updated Source Protection Plan complied by Sprague Hydrological Services has been approved by the Water Supply Division. Our system’s susceptibility to potential sources of contamination is limited to agricultural/human activities in the recharge area for the spring and severe flooding conditions in the New Haven River.
Sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) include surface water (lakes and streams) and ground water (springs and wells). As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals. It also picks up substances resulting from animal presence and human activity. Some “contaminants” may be harmful. Others, such as iron and sulfur, are not harmful. Public water systems treat water to remove contaminants, if any are present.
In order to ensure that your water is safe to drink, it is tested regularly according to regulations established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the State of Vermont.
